Dominican Republic Culture
Travelling through
the Dominica Republic you will experience lots of culture. This is a very
important part of the lives of those who live there. It is even more
important for the elders to practise and teach the young on the age-old
customs. The Dominican Republic culture has a mixture of European, African
and Native American roots and it is also influenced by the Western world
with the influx of tourists
Tourist that visit the Dominica Republic will recognize that these people
are very faithful to their Roman Catholic religion. They are very polite
and are always willing to stop and chat. They expect to be treated with
the same friendliness and politeness. Holidays and festivals are very much
a part of the culture. It is a very important part of the culture that you
do not cause embarrassment to anyone. Tourists are often very surprised at
the hospitality because the local people will offer food and drink to
anyone they meet.
The people are proud of their heritage and celebrate their leaders and
famous people. The festivals are colourful events with lots of music,
singing and dancing as well as traditional foods. The merengue is a type
of music unique to this country and although it can be played on any
instrument, the drum and the guitar are the ones most often used.
One thing you should know about the culture is that anything that does not
need to be done today, usually doesn't get done. If you call about
something, the answer is usually tomorrow and tomorrow you will get the
same answer. If you have to ask questions, ask them one at a time. If you
ask more than one question, you will only get an answer to the last one
you asked.
The mood of the people in the Dominican Republic is very happy. They enjoy
all that life has to offer them. They always see the bright side of things
rather then the bad side. Selfpity is not tolerated due to their nature.
Being polite to others and having respect for the elders is a must and
they expect this even from the visitors.
