Dominican Republic currency
The Dominican
Republic currency is the peso, but the US dollar is widely accepted. You
do have to have some idea of what the exchange rate is at the time of your
visit as well as
an understanding of the monetary system. When you purchase anything using
American money, you will always get pesos back in return. Therefore you
need to know what the exchange rate is to avoid being taken in by
unscrupulous dealers. Most of the resorts have currency exchange locations
in the malls, where you will get the right amount of money for whatever
currency you have with you. You can also use your bankcard to access the
ATM's and receive pesos when you want to take out money. When you shop or
pay for a meal, the bill is always in pesos, so it would be handy to have
the proper currency with you.
The amount of exchange you receive for your money in the Dominican
Republic depends on the market conditions at the time. You should avoid
using your credit card for any purchases outside the hotel or resort
because you could be opening yourself up to fraud. Many people have the
devices needed to copy your credit card information and leave you without
a cash balance to draw on in an emergency.
You should never carry large amounts of cash with you. If you should lose
your wallet, then you haven't lost a lot of money. One thing you should
always remember is that you should leave your credit cards behind in the
safe in your room. This way if you do lose your wallet, you only lose the
small amount of money and not your identification and access to your
banking.
