Dominican Republic foods
Mangu is truly one of
the Dominican Republic foods. If your wondering what Mangu is, it is a
vegetable on the same level as the well-known potato. It is served on the
tables of the Dominican Republic as often as potatoes are and it is made
by using the Platino Banana. It is a starch that is used to compliment a
meal in the same way we use potatoes, and in the same way as we have many
different variations of potato dishes so do the women of the Dominican
Republic have with the mangu.
Mangu is prepared by boiling the Platino banana and when it is done it is
mashed with milk, spices and other ingredients the same way we use pepper
and other spices in our potatoes. They may also add onions and or grated
cheese, so it is not so very different than what we have in the potato,
but it is a food the belongs to the Dominican republic without a doubt.
The way the Platino plant can be prepared comes in various ways the same
as the potato. Green plantains are very starchy and hard and have very
little banana flavor with no sweetness to it. They can be cooked the same
way as potatoes. They can be fried or boiled or added to soups and stews.
If you purchase the yellow plantains, they will have a creamer taste when
used, but can be used in the same way. You can also bake these the same as
a baked potato. The black plantain has a sweeter flavor then the others,
and can be used in the same way. They also can be peeled before cooking
and are usually peeled in the same manner that you would peel a banana.
The
ideal thing about plantain is that all you need to cook it is the plantain
itself. It can be cooked right in it's own skin.
Whichever way you decide to use the plantains you are in for a treat and
will more than likely add it to your weekly recipes. You might even start
using the plantains instead of potatoes, if you can get them, now and then
for something that's just a little different. You can make dinner a little
different by telling the family you are serving Mangu.
