Dominican Republic holidays
Dominican republic holidays are not so
different than the ones celebrated in North America, most especially at
Christmas and New Year. However there is a difference. Christmas in the
Dominican Republic is celebrated as a family time, much like we celebrate
Thanksgiving, where most people come back to their hometown to see family
and friends. Their Christmas trees are
white instead of green. They do not give gifts at Christmas, but do so on
January 6t, when the visit of the Three Kings is celebrated. This is when
the children leave their shoes outside where special gifts are placed in
them.
Independence day is always celebrated with festivals, which start three
days before February 27th and run for a few days after. This is a time for
colorful parades, food and drink. Holy Week is where people come from all
over the country and flock to the bay side where they watch parades with
colorful floats and brightly made costumes. The second biggest carnival is
August 15th, when the Dominican Republic celebrates Restoration Day. This
celebration commemorates the when the Dominican Republic declared war on
Spain.
The Dominican Republic has many holidays that are celebrated such as Good
Friday which is a religious holiday, Labor Day is celebrated on May 2, Our
Lady of Altagracia is celebrated on January 21, Corpus Christi which is
celebrated on May 26, on September 24, they celebrate Our lady of Las
Mercedes and Constitution Day is celebrated on November7.
As in all countries, the holidays that are celebrated in the Dominican
Republic are special occasions. The holidays listed here are ones where
the stores and banks are closed throughout, but there are also special
days celebrated in specific cities and towns. Dominican Republic holidays
are usually celebrated with parades that have wonderful costumes and for
anyone visiting there, it is a sight to behold.
