Dominican Republic information
A lot of people visit the Dominican Republic,
but few bother to get to know Dominican Republic information. They know
that it is a beautiful spot to vacation in, but know very few facts about
the country and it's people. There is so much more to the Dominican
Republic than what we see on a visit there.
The Dominican Republic is located in the Carribean. It covers two thirds
of the island of Hispaniola, between the Carribean Sea and the Atlantic
Ocean, east of Haiti. It has 48.730 square miles of total beauty with 350
miles of this being water and therefore exquisite beaches. The climate has
little variation because it is tropical with the temperatures remaining
steady for most of the year. The only draw back to this paradise is that
it is located in the middle of the hurricane belt and is subject to severe
storms from June to October. It is covered with rugged highland mountains
and fertile valleys for agriculture.
The Dominican Republic's natural resources come from its gold, nickel,
bauxite and silver mines, which use up a lot of the land leaving permanent
crops with 10.33 % and arable land with 22.65 %. They also have 2,590
square kilometers of irrigated land. The main problems lie with the
shortage of water, deforestation and the soil eroding into the sea, thus
damaging the coral reefs. Tourism has greatly aided the economy, so one
might say the beaches and the scenery are also natural resources of this
country.
There are about 10,000,000 people in this country. Most of them work on
farms, especially in the rural areas. However, the people are very poor,
which is easy to see of you go off the resorts. Outside Santa Domingo,
there are shantytowns where poverty is evident.
