The Dominican Republic population is close to 10 million people. Most of these people live in the rural areas and are very poor. However, more than half the population of the country lives in the rich farmland area in the northern lowland area that lies between Santiago and San Francisco de Macoris. More than 30% of these live near the capital and in the Seibo. This will tell you that this particular area of the Dominican Republic is very densely crowded.

About 73% of the population of the Dominican Republic is mulatto. This means that they are of mixed European and African descent. The Spanish who settled this land married native people and then when the slaves were freed they also married into the different ethnic groups. There are primary schools and government supported schools for teacher training as well as the technical schools needed to train trades people.

The influx of people from Haiti has led to an increase in population in recent years and these people form the largest foreign minority.
