Dominican Republic travel

Dominican Republic travel has its own nuances and eccentricities that tourists from North America often find hard to comprehend. You will find that the highways here are some of the best in the Caribbean. However, even though most people here do not wear seat belts that is no reason for you to break the law and probably become injured in an accident. You should expect to be caught in a traffic jam if you are driving in one of the larger cities, such as Santa Domingo, and there is no point in getting upset. Turn on the radio and listen to some music to help you relax while you wait.

You have to exercise caution when driving at night, especially if it is raining. Although the recommended speeds are higher, there is nothing wrong with slowing down to about 60 kph because visibility is often reduced. You need to avoid driving into a puddle of water because the roads tend to get a bit slippery, especially on the stretch of highway eastwards from Santa Domingo.

Residents of the Dominican Republic always keep their lights in high beam when driving at night. This does not mean that you should do the same thing. Stick to what you do at home in this case and take your time. Trucks have the right of way, probably due to the fact that they are often carrying heavy loads of produce. On the hills, there are two lanes going up and only one lane going down. You have to watch out for impatient drivers who may decide to pass, so you do have to be careful.

The traffic lights do not always mean what they do back home. At a red light, the traffic doesn't always stop and if the light is green, you may still have to stop if there is a policeman there directing traffic.
