Dominican Republic tourism
Dominican Republic tourism has really given
the economy of this small country a much needed boost. Prior to the large
influx of tourists, the economy was largely based on agriculture, mainly
tobacco, sugar and bananas. Even though tourism is important, agriculture
remains as the most important part of the economy. Many people own their
own farms and grow their own vegetables. Some farms have expanded to
raising cattle, but in the more rural parts of the country the people are
very poor.
When they think of tourism in the Dominican Republic, most people think of
the resorts, hotels, villas and beaches. Some of the top rated hotels
include:
? Barcelo Talanquera Beach, San Pedro de Macoris? Barcelo Punta Goleta,
Cabarete? Hotel Kaoba, Cabarete? Barcelo Lina, Santa Domingo
A lot of people do not realize that adventure tourism offers a fascinating
experience when you choose to visit the Dominican Republic. For example,
you can go canyoning, cascading, rock climbing, rafting, windsurfing and
much more. Cabarete and Jarabacoa are the two hotspots in the country if
you are looking for an adventurous vacation. Cabarete is well-known for
surfing and windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is also close to the mountains
and you can easily take a day trip or go horseback riding. Jarabacoa is
the largest town in the mountains and is an excellent base for all kinds
of adventures. One friendly reminder- the temperatures do dip down up in
the high altitudes so you need to bring a sweater or a jacket.
There are also national parks and wildlife preserves where you can get
close to nature while in the Dominican Republic. Los Hatises is a popular
tourist spot for the caves, Taino paintings and the mangrove swamps. Other
places include Samana Bay, which is a protected breeding ground for over
10,000 humpback whales and Isla Saona, a birdwatcher's paradise.
