Food of the Dominican Republic
If you are a lover of food, the Dominican
Republic is a fantastic place that you absolutely must visit. The food of
the Dominican Republic receives an intensified flavor not from spices,
like food from many other West Indian countries, but from herbs, the
juices from
various fruits and assorted rums. There are a number of mouth-watering
signature dishes of Dominican cuisine, some of which are:
- La bandera, which translates to "the flag" and consists of vegetables,
beans, white rice, green plantain fritters and meat. This is actually the
most common meal in the Dominican Republic
- Comida criolla, which is made up of beans,
chicken and rice and
- Chivo guisado, which is a stew made from
young goat meat that has been
marinated in rum, herbs and lime juice. Goat meat in the Dominican is
naturally tasty as goats are grazed on wild oregano
Desserts in the Dominican are mainly either of a cream, a pudding or a
flan and are generally very sweet as sugar and various flavors of
condensed milk are among the main ingredients in most desserts. A variety
of fruits are also very popular in desserts of the Dominican. The use of
the abundant tropical fruit in the country usually depends on the altitude
of the community, as different fruits are grown at different altitudes. To
illustrate in central regions of the Dominican cherries, strawberries and
plums are grown and incorporated into many desserts.
Looking for something to help wash down your meal? Wine enthusiasts can
try one of the many imported wine beverages which are, however, rather
expensive. A local vineyard hopes to produce some domestic wine within the
coming years. Beer is very common in the Dominican as well but the
favorite alcoholic beverage among the locals and visitors is rum. The
Brugal, Bermudez and Barceló are the most well-liked rums in the area and
make some succulent drinks.
