Weather in the Dominican Republic

Most of the Dominican Republic enjoys a tropical climate, so you can expect warm sunny days with the weather Dominican Republic. The average annual temperatures near the coast, which is where most of the resorts are located, are about 78°. However, record highs of up to 90° have been reported along the border area separating the Dominican Republic from Haiti. As you go up into the mountains, the temperature starts to go down with the high altitudes. It is not uncommon to have below freezing temperatures in these locations in the winter.

When it does rain in the northeast, you can expect to encounter heavy rainfall, where the winds blowing off the Atlantic Ocean sweep inland. Rainfall amounts are moderate in the southeast and only very slight in the southwestern part of the country. For example, The Samana Peninsula can get as much as 100 inches of rain a year, while places such as Barahoma receive less than 24 inches a year. Most of the rain falls between May and November- the rainy season. This is the time of the year to visit the Dominican Republic if you hope to get reduced fares and rates at the resort because the heavy tourist traffic is usually from November until April.

Hurricanes are quite common in the Dominican Republic. The hurricane season also coincides with the rainy season and as it is in the direct path of the strong winds blowing across the Atlantic, many of the hurricanes have caused tremendous amounts of damage.

The weather in this country remains pretty much the same year round. The usual daily weather forecast is sunny or partly cloudy with a chance of a shower. However, even if you do travel to this country during the rainy season, rain showers occur in the early morning, late afternoon or at night. They won't interfere with your day at the beach.
